Hey friends! If you know me, you know that I like having my daily routines. No matter where I’m at in the world, I try to do relatively the same thing every morning. A morning routine helps create a sense of normalcy when the rest of the day will be hectic and is an essential way to start your day off well. Over time, my morning routine has gone through some changes as I need it but no matter what, I keep one. And here’s how you can keep a morning routine too, even while traveling. Keep reading for some tips and recommendations.

Create your ideal morning routine that you can do no matter where you are in the world. My morning routine can be done either at home or on the road while only minor changes. Having a morning routine can keep you sane, especially when your days are jam-packed with activities. It’s a consistent thing in your life.
But be realistic. Some days can just go to shit and it’s out of your hands. That’s life and it’s okay. You can’t start every day the same but you can try your best. I say that about 5 out of 7 days I’m able to keep a routine at home. While traveling though, probably about 4 out of 7 days. I try my best though.
Let yourself adjust to the time differences. The trick? Stay awake until at least 8 pm in whatever time zone you’re in, no matter how tired you are from traveling. Also, wake up early and don’t let yourself sleep in. I always try to wake up around 7:00 AM local time no matter how little sleep I’ve gotten the night before. Don’t get me wrong, I love sleeping but I prefer having more time in the day.
Eat a good breakfast, preferably with lots of protein, fruits, and vegetables. I know that you hear this in every commercial or in every health class, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. There’s nothing better than starting off the day with a full and happy stomach.
Do some planning. When I say planning, I mean writing in a planner or making a list. I personally prefer making lists but it’s whatever that works for you. I like to write down everything I want to get done that day. Ideally, I would like to do this the night before but this is flexible. Seeing my goals for the day really motivates me to knock them out.
The night before, tidy up your space. Waking up to a mess can make you go into the day frustrated and stressed. So, to prevent this, clean up the night before. I always make sure the dishes are in the dishwasher, the living room is tidied, and my bedroom floor is clean. A clean space = better mentality.
Adjust your morning routine as you need to. What worked for you last month might not be working for you now. It’s important to keep checking in and figuring out what’s best for you.
My Usual Morning Routine
But first, coffee.
I don’t know about you, but I NEED caffeine in the morning. I start my day by drinking a cup (or two) of coffee and reading from whatever book I’m currently enjoying. Currently, I’m rereading the Harry Potter series yet again. I like to read a couple chapters in the morning before I start my day because I find that reading really wakes up my mind.
Then, I eat breakfast. I’m not usually hungry right when I wake up so I wait until after I finish reading. I do it a priority to eat because otherwise, I get very hangry and no one wants to see that lol. Usually, I just have a bowl of cereal and some fruit but it depends on whatever I’m craving. If I’m traveling, I love trying out a local restaurant.
Once I finish eating, I actually meditate for a few minutes. I recently discovered the Headspace app and it’s been a great way to empty my head and prepare for my day. Some of my best ideas come to me during this time so I always keep a notebook and a pen close by to jot them down.
Brush Teeth/Do Makeup
After meditating, I brush my teeth and wash my face. Well, to be honest, I only wash my face some days but I’m trying to get better at doing it daily. Once my teeth (and face) are clean, I do my makeup – it’s a self-indulgent process that I revel in. I try to wear makeup most days because I love how it makes me feel put together and ready to take on the day.
Of course, there are days that I go makeup free that I love just as much… but nothing beats the process of putting on makeup for me. I usually go for some concealer around the eyes (I have dark eyelids and circles) and on any spots, fill in my eyebrows, through on some winged eyeliner and some mascara. It only takes about 10 minutes to do but it’s a great way for me to be prepared for the day.

Plan and Write
Next, I plan out my day. Ideally, I would like to do this the night before but this is flexible. Seeing my goals for the day really motivates me to knock them out. I also take some time to write in my journal. I believe that daily writing is essential for not only improvement of your writing skills but also working out problems.
Read the News/Check Social Media
Then I read the news – I love the news app on my iPhone and I usually spend an hour or so scrolling through and catching up on world events. It can be depressing sometimes but I also want to stay informed.
And lastly, I check social media – I need to scroll through Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Snapchat, whatever. I love seeing what my friends and family are up to. And I also get a lot of blog post ideas through social media so it’s a win-win. I just make sure to keep my notebook near by to jot down ideas.
