Hey friends! Today, as you can tell by the title, I’m writing a book review! I haven’t written a book review since I discussed the worst book of all time in August of 2016 so it’s been awhile. But, I’m talking about a book on the complete opposite end of the spectrum: Bird Box by Josh Malerman. Basically, my favorite horror book of all time. Yes, I said it. Read more of my thoughts below!

“Something is out there . . .
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?
Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motley group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?
Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.”
You guys. This book was just… absolutely fantastic. When I picked this up, I was in the midst of a reading slump after rereading the entire Harry Potter series again and this brought me straight out of that slump. It was extremely addictive and deliciously scary. Bird Box isn’t like your typical scary ala Stephen King, however. It felt like anxiety and it felt so real, like I was actually in the story and I legitimately became afraid of looking outside while reading this.
I do wish there would’ve been more of a closed ending BUT the ending completely worked for this type of story so I wouldn’t rate that as a negative. You’re not supposed to know what’s going on and that definitely adds to the anxiety you feel like while reading this.
The writing style of this was fantastic, it made it so easy to fly through the chapters and I finished this book in one and a half sittings, which was the quickest I’ve read a book in absolute ages. I like that the chapters flipped back and forth between the past and present and I sped read this so fast towards the end of the book because I just had to know what the heck was going on (but in a good way, not because I was confused).
I definitely do recommend reading this, even if you’re not the biggest fan of horror. It’s not like true horror, and those no blood or guts, or anything else that makes up a typical horror book. It’s fun and nervewracking and feels like a roller coast ride and it’s just so so so good.
