Move aside San Francisco, SF now stands for Sioux Falls. With a great culture, an art scene that rivals New York City, the largest single story mall in the country, and a thriving downtown – you definitely need to add Sioux Falls to your list of places to visit. I also happen to call Sioux Falls my home but I promise I’m not being biased. So here’s the best Sioux Falls travel guide you can find.
Sioux Falls Travel Guide
The Largest City In South Dakota
Sioux Falls happens to be the largest city in the state of South Dakota. That doesn’t mean it’s a booming metropolis such as Los Angeles or Dallas though. It has a good balance between a large city and a small town. It’s small enough that it’s super cheap to live here/visit, but large enough that there’s always something going on. I guess you could call it the New York City of the Midwest.
There’s An Actual Waterfall
Yep, you read that right. Sioux Falls wasn’t named Sioux Falls for anything! There’s an actually roaring waterfall in the middle of the city. Can your city say the same? It’s the most popular tourist destination in Eastern South Dakota. And from Mid-November to Mid-January, Falls Park transforms into a beautiful winter wonderland. It’s quite the sight. And a popular spot for proposals (hint hint, Christopher 😉 ) Plus, some of the oldest buildings in Sioux Falls are located right by the Falls!
Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF)
Speaking of downtown.. it happens to be my favorite place in Sioux Falls. I mentioned that it has an art scene to rival New York City and I stand by it. Just check out this page as proof! My favorite part of Downtown is the Sculpture Walk. It’s super cool and a great way to showcase artists. One of the best sculptures located downtown would be The Statue of David– a full-scale casting of the original by Michelangelo. And it’s the only full-size replica created? I could be wrong. I probably am wrong. It’s still awesome.
But perhaps the most awesome event that occurs downtown would be the Sioux Falls Zombie-walk. I believe it’s free to take part in (unless you have a float) and you just need to make yourself look like a gruesome zombie. How awesome? I can’t say I’ve heard of many other cities hosting a zombie-walk…
Largest Single Story Mall In The United States
Another awesome thing about Sioux Falls is that we actually have the largest single story mall in the country – The Empire Mall. All of my jobs (before I moved out on my own) have been in the mall so it holds a special place in my heart. I wiped tables in Applebee’s, sewed tutus and sweatshirts at Personal Stitch (they’ve since closed), and sold questionable merchandise at Spencer’s. And I’ve spent hours hanging out in the food court because that was the thing to do back then. When I leave for Europe next summer, you bet I will purchase at least half of my “Europe Wardrobe” from the mall. This is definitely a place you should check out while you’re in town – even if it’s just to say that you’ve been to the largest single story mall in the United States lol.
ALL THE FOOD
There are SO MANY great restaurants and eateries located in Sioux Falls. So many, that I have ELEVEN favorite restaurants.. just in one city! My favorites include… Pappy’s, Jacky’s, C.H. Patisserie, Mackenzie River, Crawford’s, Phillips Ave Diner, Zaroty’s, The Pourhouse, Pho Quynh, Backyard BBQ, and Camille’s. Phew, that was a mouth full.
When you step foot into the Terrace Park Japanese Garden’s, you instantly leave Sioux Falls and step foot into Japan. Or so it seems. There’s beautiful trees, flowers, a lake. It’s stunning. I got my first baby photos taken here too 😉 But seriously, this place has the best photo ops for your Instagram account so take full advantage while you’re in town.
That’s all I can think of for now! The best Sioux Falls Travel Guide you can find 😉 I may complain about living here a lot but I’m just over-dramatic. Sioux Falls is a great place to live and definitely a place you should visit. Rent an Airbnb for a weekend and come say hello!
